Sun Fun Festival is Coming Back This Summer

The Sun Fun Festival is coming back to Myrtle Beach this summer.

The Sun Fun Festival first began in the 1950s and has been a long-standing festival in the Grand Strand area. However, the festival endured a five year hiatus from 2011 and 2016 and was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Myrtle Beach City Council recently approved a permit for the festival to come back this summer.

This year’s festival will be the 65th event of it’s kind and take place from June 4 to June 6 at various locations around Myrtle Beach including Plyler Park and the boardwalk. Guests will be able to enjoy live music, vendors and various performers during the event, which is free for the public.

Some of the highlights of this year’s event include music from Swingin’ Medallions and Too Much Sylvia, a sand sculpture competition and a Sun Fun parade.

The recently updated Broadway Theater will open this summer in Myrtle Beach.

The theater will hold 370 seats and will be located along Broadway at the Beach across from The Simpsons in 4D. It was previously the home of the Charles Bach magic show.

Officials are hoping the renovations will elevate the downtown Myrtle Beach area.

According to Lauren Clever, Downtown Development Director, the theater will have a variety of uses. Clever said “Any kind of performance, whether it’s musical, drama, could be a rock concert, movies, could be really anything.”

Clever also described the restorations the theater is undergoing saying, “We’re going to restore them back to their original characteristics. They’ll look like they did back in the day when they were functioning and vibrant.”

The first show to grace the stage of the Broadway Theatre will be Le Grand Cirque, which is set to begin on May 20th. It will run through October.

Iconic Myrtle Beach SkyWheel Returns to Grand Strand

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel has returned to the Grand Strand. Since January, the iconic SkyWheel has undergone a series of repairs and refurbishments.

The SkyWheel is a popular tourist attraction, where people can board a private, fully enclosed gondola to observe the city of Myrtle Beach. Each gondola is heated or cooled depending on the time of year, making it a great year-round attraction. This May marks the 10th anniversary of the SkyWheel’s erection, which is expected to bring a large celebration to the Grand Strand.

The recent updates to the SkyWheel include a new light show that guests can enjoy on their ride around the wheel.

In order to properly reassemble the structure, parts of Ocean Boulevard will be closed for the remainder of April.

While a reopening date has yet to be determined, officials should be making an announcement in the coming weeks on when visitors can enjoy the SkyWheel again.

Funplex Amusement Park Opening Soon – Here’s What to Expect

The new Funplex amusement park is gearing up for a Spring 2021 opening.

Funplex, a New Jersey-based amusement park, is basing their Myrtle Beach park on what used to be a 100-space parking lot located at 1405 Ocean Boulevard.

The outdoor amusement park will feature 7 different attractions including Sunny Day Swing, Hang 10 Silly Cups, Hook & Slice, Mach Fun, Up & Overboard and Sky Velocity. One of the most intriguing rides is the Fun in the Sun, a rollercoaster that resembles a human hamster wheel.

In addition to the rides and rollercoasters, there will also be a restaurant and bar on site for patrons to enjoy.

Brain Williams, CEO of Funplex, is for locals and tourists to experience the magic of Funplex. In an interview with Coaster101, Williams said “with the level of attractions and the way we will operate the park, I am confident that once a guest comes to the Funplex they will create new traditions with us in their plans each year.”

Funplex is just one of the many attractions coming to the Grand Strand this year.
