The annual Myrtle Beach Marathon is planned to take place this year according to officials. A resolution passed by the city council confirmed the decision to hold the 24th annual Myrtle Beach Marathon on March 6, 2021, as it is a vital sports tourism attraction for the city.
Officials are expecting around 5,000 athletes to take part in any number of the events including the 5K, full marathon and half marathon. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, the corresponding fitness expo and Family Fun Run will be held virtually this year.
The race begins near Broadway at the Beach and runners are taken through a scenic stretch of Ocean Blvd before finishing at Pelicans Ballpark, a route that highlights some of the cities most frequented spots.
The event is projected to generate $1.7 million in revenue from visitor spending, which would greatly benefit the city’s already deflated tourism income.
Officials do have the option of cancelling or postponing the event at any point, if they believe it will be unsafe to hold the race.
