Myrtle Beach Private Schools Plan To Reopen Next Month

While the Horry County public schools have opted for a September start, there are a few private schools that will be opening their doors come next month. Specifically, the Ascent Christian Academy in North Myrtle Beach will have in-person classes beginning August 17th. It seems traditional learning, with a few tweaks, will commence.

Precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are being put in place. Students and teachers will practice social distancing in common areas, as well as several hand sanitizer stations placed around the school. Water fountains will not be available for use.

“We’ve done so well with our preschool in keeping it safe and sanitized that I feel very confident opening back up August 17,” said Ann Black, the Ascent Christian Academy founder in reference to summer care programs.

The main reason Ascent Christian Academy feels comfortable opening is due to its small amount of attendees. With only 35 students and 10 staff members, parents feel more comfortable sending their kids to the classroom.

Because masks are not required, parents have the option to select online learning for their kids if they’re concerned. Students that are exposed will enter a mandatory quarantine for two weeks.

Horry County Schools To Suspend Athletic Conditioning

Horry County Schools will cease athletic conditioning until further notice. Though the team has not reported a positive COVID-19 case, as numbers start to climb in the county, they’ve decided to take action. A statement has not been issued addressing the 2020 season.

Typically, football and other athletic conditioning take place every summer in preparation for the new school year. No equipment was permitted this June, and only nine players were allowed per each coach pod. This was in regulation with COVID-19 social distancing requirements. As of now, there hasn’t been any news regarding the cancelation of the actual sporting season.

All coaches were told this news prior to the Fourth of July weekend. This was done in part by the assumption of celebrations that could potentially spread the virus. The suspension is in place until further notice. For now, athletes will sit tight and wait for more news regarding their conditioning and the future of their season.

Coastal Carolina University’s Mandatory Furlough Plan Approved

Recently approved by the Division of State Human Resources, Coastal Carolina University is set to enforce a mandatory furlough plan. This comes as a response to COVID-19 affecting all businesses, including the education sphere.

What this means for the CCU is that staff and faculty members making over $35,751 or more a year are required to take 20 unpaid workdays off during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Those making below are exempt from the furlough plan. The DSHR mandates that in this case, furlough days can be spread out over the year or taken consecutively for the month of July only.

As of May 2020, Gov. Henry McMaster signed a resolution that qualified state-institutions to seek furloughs but capped the number of maximum working days to 20. There won’t be any unexpected changes regarding this furlough plan in the near future.

CCU plans to continue finding ways to efficiently fulfill budget cuts while evaluating saving measures. This “includes the possibility of not hiring new positions and not retiring vacant positions.”

National Running Day

Every year on the first Wednesday of June, runners across the United States put on their favorite pair of sneakers and hit the pavement. As a means of celebrating the sport of running, the now globally recognized holiday was originally created to draw attention to the health benefits of running while bringing people together.

Don’t be surprised if you see sprinters outside on June 3rd. All levels of athleticism are encouraged to participate. No matter the distance, the holiday is meant to excite people to get up and get moving! If you’re looking for a change of scenery while you celebrate National Running Day, check out this list of the best running spots in Myrtle Beach.

The Horry County Bike and Run Park

This challenging trail is referred to as the “Hulk” because of its twisty turns and rollercoaster hills. Those seeking something casual, be warned, this is a spot for passionate joggers. Bikers are also welcome in a sectioned off side.

The Market Common

Casual walkers love the loop around the Valor Memorial Garden, also known as the Market Common. The 1.1-mile path features ponds and fields. If you’re looking for a change in scenery, the Market Common is your best bet.

The Beach and Boardwalk

The wide stretch of sand makes running on the beach in Myrtle doable, so long as you stick close to the water. The boardwalk goes on for 1.2 miles. So when you’re sick of the sand, you’ve got plenty of boardwalks to get your steps in. Timing is important for beach runners. Peak sun hours could mean weaving through umbrellas and sandcastles. The early morning is ideal for avoiding crowds.

Murrells Inlet

Looking for something a little quieter? Murrells Inlet is an endurance runners paradise. The flat stretch of land offers calm residential views. Without much traffic, you can finish your run uninterrupted.

Huntington Beach State Park

This trail offers a more secluded spot while still having its scenic nature views. With almost two miles of trails, wetlands, and marsh, Huntington Beach is the perfect outdoor running spot.

Horry County Lifts State of Emergency

Horry County Council voted Wednesday morning to end its state of emergency during the coronavirus pandemic, despite extended emergency orders from other local governments. A variety of businesses will be allowed to reopen as a result, despite their previous status as “nonessential.”

Included in this are home furnishing stores, gyms, pools, hair salons, and private zoos, joining businesses that were allowed to open last Monday with social distancing measures. Out of over 500 businesses that applied to reopen under South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster’s updated coronavirus emergency orders, nearly 90 percent of them were given essential status.

MyrtleBeachOnline reports that most applications were submitted in early April before emergency orders started to be rescinded, and before the gradual reopening of businesses in the past week.

“The goal was/is to keep as many businesses open that are able to safely do so. In general, if a retail operation remained open, that business was likely providing products deemed essential,” Commerce Spokesperson Alex Clark wrote in an email.

Positive cases of the coronavirus in Horry County have reached 269, with 18 virus-related deaths since mid-March, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. Last week alone the county had 36 newly announced cases.
