CCU Plans to Build Multi-Million Dollar Football Complex

Coastal Carolina’s Board of Trustees recently approved the erection of a new multi-million dollar football complex.

The proposed facility would be located across from University Boulevard near Brooks Stadium.

According to Chief Financial Officer David Frost, these plans have been a longtime coming saying “Moving University Boulevard to the other side has been in the works … been on the master plan for a long time.”

The purpose of the facility would be to house an indoor practice facility for the Coastal Carolina University football team. The 78,000 square-foot facility is expected to cost around $15 million to erect but would be fully funded by donors.

The vote took place on May 6th – however, the Coastal Educational Fund must approve the proposed facility before construction can begin.

In addition to the proposed football facility, the university’s Board of Trustees also voted to put $300,000 in CARES Act funds towards helping students get the COVID-19 vaccine, while still maintaining the cost of tuition and room and board.

Coastal Carolina Head Coach Named Walter Camp Coach of the Year

Coastal Carolina’s football team has had quite the year and the program continues to rack in the awards.

Coastal Carolina head football coach Jamey Chadwell was recently voted the Walter Camp Coach of the Year. The award is voted upon by 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and directors across the nation.

Chadwell led the Chanticleer’s to their first ever 8-0 Sun Belt Conference record and an 11-1 overall record, with their only loss coming in their first FBS postseason bowl game last weekend. Coastal Carolina was ranked as high as No. 9 in the AP’s top 25 football teams this year.

The Walter Camp Coach of the Year award is Chadwell’s third national coach of the year award so far. He was also named the Sporting News’ 2020 Coach of the Year, the 2020 CBS Sports/247Sports Coach of the Year and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Group of 5 2020 Conference Coach of the Year. Chadwell has also been named a finalist for a variety of other awards, some of which have yet to be announced.

Even during one of the most challenging years for sports programs, Jamey Chadwell’s Coastal Carolina football team has found a way to prevail and deliver some must-watch television.

Coastal Carolina University Has Selected A New President

Starting in June 2021, Coastal Carolina University will be under the leadership of a new president.

Dr. Michael T. Benson has been tapped as the new president of Coastal Carolina University. CCU’s Board of Trustees recently selected the new president after conducting an extensive search, which began two years ago.

Benson previously served as the president of Eastern Kentucky University from 2013 to 2020 and is currently a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University.

Current CCU president, David Decenzo, announced his retirement in December 2018 after serving the university for thirteen years.

In a statement regarding the selection of a new president, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and chair of CCU’s Presidential Search Committee Delan Stevens said, “We have had an intense and thorough search for the next president of Coastal Carolina University. This search culminated in several rounds of vetting. I believe based on these sessions, that one candidate has risen to the top of our deliberations.”

The decision was unanimous, with all members of the Board of Trustees voting in favor of Benson to become the next president of Coastal Carolina University.

CCU’s Plan to Return On-Campus

Instead of heading to campus like a typical year at Coastal Carolina University, students will begin their Fall 2020 semesters with online education until at least Sept. 8. After Thanksgiving break, classes will resume online. This decision came as a response to growing coronavirus case numbers in the South Carolina area.

Students have the option to forgo in-person learning for an entirely online semester. This academic plan was announced via a video on Tuesday, July 21. To follow, a 30-day video campaign launch fosters communication between staff and students. In the campaign, the campus safety measures are broken down for viewers.

According to CCU president, David DeCenzo, “the decision to delay in-person instruction for a few weeks provides us with the best scenario to safely resume on-campus operations. Upon our return to campus, it will be essential for all members of Teal Nation to wear face coverings inside buildings, practice physical distancing, and follow the protocols established in our Coastal Comeback Plan to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.”

Those opting for the in-person plan will all be on campus by Sept. 4th at the latest. This optional second move-in allows residents to take their time in deciding what their next move is. Those that opt for a September move-in receive a two-week housing and dining credit incentive.

As of now, a plan for Spring 2021 is being crafted by DeCenzo and other CCU staff members. They will be gradually updating their reopening plans via the Coastal Comeback Plan website.
