Volunteers Help Fund Wheelchair Mats in North Myrtle Beach

Volunteers of the Adaptive Surf Project and the Surfrider Foundation began installing 6 new wheelchair mats across North Myrtle Beach this week. These wheelchair beach access points allow those that have a disability to enjoy the shore more easily.

Created using UV resistant plastic, the beach mats reduce the distance that wheelchairs must travel over the sand. North Myrtle residents volunteered their time installing these to better improve a beach they know and love.

“These six wheelchair mat locations along the North Myrtle Beach coastline meet South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (SCDHEC) and South Carolina Office of Ocean & Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) regulations,” read a post on the city’s Facebook.

You can find the mats in place at the following locations:

  • 4200 North Ocean Boulevard
  • 3400 North Ocean Boulevard
  • 6th Avenue South
  • 33rd Avenue South
  • 47th Avenue South
  • Shorehaven Drive in the Crescent Beach section.

North Myrtle beach remains to have 140 beach access points, of which 44 of them are wheelchair accessible.

4th of July Fireworks

It’s back! The famous Myrtle Beach 4th of July fireworks show is in the works after new show sponsors stepped in. Thanks to Budweiser and McDonalds, Myrtle Beach-goers can expect a grand finale of rockets and sparklers come this Independence Day.

Join the city of Myrtle Beach at the Boardwalk on July 4th for a 10 p.m. firework show. Originally canceled due to budget cuts, this show’s expected to be as exciting as the last. You can count on crowds for roman candles and colorful firecrackers as we celebrate our nation’s independence. Face masks and social distancing are encouraged in an effort to maintain safety.

While news of the Cherry Grove Pier and Barefoot Landing fireworks being canceled has left many wondering how they’ll celebrate this year, there are still several ways to commemorate the day. Starting at Surfside beach, locals will be hosting a golf cart parade from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Deck out your ride for a chance to win the award for “the most patriotic cart.” Political decorations are discouraged.

Strap on your running shoes and hit the Market Common’s pavement for the annual Independence Day Race. Choose between a 5k or an 8k at this family-friendly event. You’ll want to get a good night’s sleep for this 7:30 am wakeup call. With a high of 85 degrees on Saturday the Fourth, it’s sure to be a lovely day filled with fun and fireworks.

Beginners Guide to Surfing

Featured Image: Surfer Today

Have you ever wanted to start surfing, but didn’t know where to begin? We understand that learning how to surf can be daunting, which is why we’ve put together this beginner’s guide so you can learn the right way.

Choose the Right Board and Equipment

Beginning surfers often make the mistake of buying a shortboard first, when in fact these boards do not have the volume or length for a new surfer to catch enough waves to actually improve their skills. Instead, get a longboard between 9-10 feet. These are easier to paddle on and stand on, making it easier for you to be catching waves and popping up like a pro in no time. Once you’ve improved your basic skills, you can get your first serious board. When picking out your first board, you’ll also want to pick up an ankle leash, some surf wax, and (depending on the climate) a wetsuit.

Choose the Right Waves

Choosing the right location to learn how to surf can be difficult. When you first start out, you’ll want to avoid popular spots because they’re typically crowded. We recommend staying clear of these crowded spots to avoid putting yourself and others in harm’s way while you are learning. Once you’ve found a quieter location, find a stretch of ocean where the waves break over semi-shallow water (waist-deep to chest-deep). Here you can catch plenty of waves to practice paddling and standing up.

Learning Surf Etiquette

Learning to surf can be intimidating to some because of the reputation local surfers often have for being unforgiving to beginners, but as long as you follow the rules of the water you’ll have no problems. Surfing is somewhat unique in that waves are limited, which means every wave you catch is a wave someone else in the lineup can’t catch. Be mindful of who else is looking to catch the next wave, and if someone beats you to it, don’t drop in and cut them off. Maneuvers like that will land you on the @kook_of_the_day Instagram.

Meet The Three Great White Sharks Hanging Out Off The Coast Of South Carolina

Have you heard the news? South Carolina just got three new residents. Gray Lady, Jefferson, and Hal each made the long journey from the Northeast to the great state of South Carolina. Around the New Year, these three great white sharks made their way to the South Carolina coast, making it their temporary home.

Ocearch, a nonprofit organization leading research efforts around great white sharks and other large marine species, tracked each of them as they made their way through the dark depths of the ocean.

The waters southeast of Charleston, South Carolina are buzzing with white sharks right now. Three have pinged there in the last week @MissCostaShark, WhiteSharkHal and @GreyLadyShark pic.twitter.com/wcnDOPxv3K

— OCEARCH (@OCEARCH) January 3, 2019

After leaving the Northeast region, all three great whites made their way down to Florida before heading back up north and taking up temporary residence in South Carolina. Grey Lady, originally from the Nantucket area, and Jefferson, hailing from the waters of Nova Scotia, are right below the Charleston coast. However, Hal, also joining us from Nova Scotia, traveled farther North for the New Year, hitting up Myrtle Beach.

Ocearch has tagged over 300 marine animals during their expeditions allowing you to watch the journey each of them makes as they travel the world.

While Grey Lady, Jefferson, and Hal are the only three tagged great whites off the coast of South Carolina, there are many other sharks hanging out off the coast, including three tiger sharks named Jax, Georgia, and Miss Michalove, and Norris, the hammerhead shark.

Additionally, with the recent arrival of our three new residents, we can bet there are more great whites coming into the area that aren’t tagged.

You can track the journey of all the tagged animals using Ocearch’s tracking map or keep up with each individual shark by following them on Twitter: @WhiteSharkHal, @GreyLadyShark, and @MissCostaShark.

Sometimes you can even catch a conversation between the sharks:

Hey @WhiteSharkHal you sound stressed out. I’m near Charleston too and know of a fabulous sushi spot. Let’s go…my treat! https://t.co/TkPtkmwciw
